What to look for

  • Type: Compact Fluorescent Lamp (CFL)
  • Base: E26/E27 standard screw base
  • Wattage: 30W–150W range (wattage doesn't affect plasma transfer)
  • Voltage: Any voltage (127V, 220V, etc.)
  • Color Temperature: Any (daylight, warm white, cool white)
  • You can mix different wattages and sizes with the Y-adapters, as long as you keep both terminals balanced.
  • Brand doesn't matter as long as specifications match

What to exclude

  • Incandescent bulbs will NOT work
  • LED bulbs will NOT work

How lightbulbs and plasma work together

Compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) pair with plasma machines because their internal gas respond to high-frequency current.
The plasma will discharge through the lightbulb's copper electrodes, exciting the rare gases inside the bulbs and then "jump" (arc) through the thin glass to be received by your skin.
You'll notice a clear asymmetric output at the terminals during use—this is a natural result of the positive and negative poles produced by the plasma machine's output.
Because of this polarity difference, one set of bulbs will typically dim and extinguish before the other. This is completely normal and expected behavior, not a sign of malfunction or uneven quality.

Lightbulb lifespan and replacement

CFL bulbs used with plasma machines typically last between 50–200 hours of active use, depending on the intensity and frequency of sessions.
Signs that a bulb needs replacement include dimming, the glow turning violet, reduced responsiveness, or darkening.
Keep spare bulbs on hand so you can continue sessions without interruption. Most users find that 3–4 full sets of bulbs cover several months of regular use.
The bulbs remain affordable and available, making replacement straightforward as part of your ongoing practice.

Risks of working with fluorescent lightbulbs

Working with compact fluorescent lightbulbs (CFLs) carries a few clear risks to manage: the glass can break and release a small amount of mercury vapor and rare gases like neon. A one-time exposure from breaking a CFL is generally comparable to the mercury you'd get from about one to two cans of tuna. Short-term symptoms are unlikely; at most, mild headache is possible. If a bulb shatters, leave the area for 5–10 minutes, ventilate thoroughly, avoid inhalation, and dispose of debris properly.
Bulbs will heat up and leave a temporary mark if held on one spot too long; keep them moving and let them cool between sessions. You can also do this over clothing to reduce direct skin contact.
CFLs and the systems that drive them can emit electromagnetic interference that disrupts nearby electronics, and strong fields from related equipment can interfere with or damage electronic medical devices; people with pacemakers or who rely on electronic medical equipment should not use or be near active sessions, and keep electronics several meters away.
Operationally, avoid running bulbs with “nowhere for the plasma to flow” and hold them before activation to reduce the chance of small shocks.

Which lightbulb is right for me?

The answer is that you should use different lightbulbs for different applications.
Your choice will depend on the size of your hands, whether you're using them in the Y-split adapter ("double lightsaber") or solo.
Comfort and surface coverage are the basic variables to observe. Small will help for localized points. Medium might work better for forearms, calves, and neck. Large are good for thighs, back, and shared sessions.
There are almost endless possibilities when you combine them with adapters that provide multiple surfaces to transfer the plasma to the skin.
They're like ice cream flavors—you need to try them all to discover what works best for you!

For the best experience with lightbulbs, keep them completely dry. Pure talcum powder creates an ultra-dry surface and delivers the smoothest session possible.
